Gay Bride Diaries

Dearly Beloved,

Let’s talk about losing those few extra pounds to fit in your dress before the wedding AND staying healthy beyond that. I’ve learned from nutritionists, doctors, chiropractors, personal trainers, and dieticians. Let me tell you what works for me. It’s 80% diet and 20% workout. But it’s not what you think. Both diet and workout sound awful perhaps. But diet is just what you eat and what you don’t eat. Here’s what you shouldn’t eat: sugar, processed foods. If you can’t hunt it, fish it, grow it, or pick it, then you shouldn’t be eating it. Yogurt is high in sugar. Look for yogurt brands like Siggis and read the labels. I’ve found one as low as 5g of sugar. Some say 13g or 26g. You shouldn’t have more than 20g of added sugar a day, so why would you waste it all on one serving of yogurt. 2% milk has 12g of sugar in an 8 oz serving. If it says low fat or reduced fat, just look at the label, they add sugar when they take away the fat. Sugar without fiber goes straight to belly fat. Fake sugars aren’t good for you except the natural one from the Stevia plant. Truvia is a form of Stevia you can mix with your coffee or tea or smoothie. Zevia is the soda made with Stevia so it’s way better for you than normal soda. Cut down on the bread, pasta, and alcohol. Even in two weeks you should see a difference in your body and energy level. So what can you eat? Replace the sugar with good fat. Olive oil on salad or wheat pasta. Avacados. Low sugar protein bar or protein shake with almond milk. Peanut butter with an apple. Eggs, chicken, and fish are great proteins without a lot of fat. For breakfast I eat a banana and a few eggs. Lunch a salad with chickpeas, beets, pine nuts, and olive oil and salt. Say no to salad dressing and start using olive oil. For dinner I eat a low fat protein and some veggies. If I have a craving I eat dark chocolate covered almonds. And if you eat like this regularly then it’s okay to have some bacon or some chocolate or popcorn or glass of red wine in moderation. After two weeks of not eating sugar, it’s amazing how you don’t crave it. I still think I want it, but when I eat it it doesn’t even taste good to me anymore. My wife is Asian and eats white rice every day. She finally switched to brown rice and noticed her figure changing.

Random Wedding thought of the week:

How many people didn’t fit in their wedding dress before their wedding? How many can fit in it just 6-12 months after their wedding?

Quote from my memoir, “Diary of a Gay, Pregnant Bride”:

And of all food to eat on a hot day, it was roasted pig and pig intestines. On hot summer days my mother usually made salad or something cold to eat, not anything hot, and certainly never intestines.

Questions to Consider:

Healthier food may be a little more expensive, but isn’t it worth it to your body?

Did you know?

Low intensity cardio(walking or jogging on a treadmill) burns fat, but only while you’re doing it. High intensity burns for 36 hours after you do it, too. That’s why it’s so much better to do the 12 minute workout and workout less times a week!

Good Advice:

Besides eating healthier, exercise is also a great way to tone your body and be healthy. But if you’re like me, I hate to exercise and don’t have hours to spend at the gym. Here’s what I discovered through my chiropractor and it really works! It’s a 12 minute intense cardio workout you can do at home. It’s so quick and easy I hardly know I’m working out until it’s over. It’s all about keeping your heart rate up and switching up what you do. There’s even rest time in between so you can easily make it through 12 minutes. I like doing 20 seconds of a workout and resting for 10 seconds. You do that for 12 minutes. 3 different workouts, 8 repetitions of each. One could be pushups, one squats, and one situps. You just do as many as you can as quickly as you can in those 20 seconds. But if you get tired try to keep your heart rate going during those 20 seconds, so run in place, jumping jacks, etc. As long as you keep moving you will burn fat for 36 hours after your workout!

Cycling can also be a great way to keep in shape, but if you’re like me and don’t fancy venturing outside in the cold or rain, try an indoor option. Surprisingly you’ll find some of the best upright exercise bikes are still well within the cost of a typical yearly gym subscription. Plus the easier it is to get on the bike, the more likely you will be to do it regularly!

Pride, Physical fitness, and Pine nuts,
