The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Anchorage

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Anchorage, and the rest of Alaska, since October 12th, 2014. Proceedings to allow same-sex marriage in the state of Alaska began when five same-sex couples filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Anchorage. They were challenging the state’s same-sex marriage ban that had been in place since 1998.

The judge ruled in favor of the couples and declared that Alaska’s statutory and constitutional bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional. The state repeatedly attempted to appeal this decision, but ultimately removed their request when the United States Supreme Court decided that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry.
