Wedding Vendor's Number One Resource!

Roxanne Hunt, Los Angeles, California wedding officiant and owner of Weddings by Roxanne Hunt weighed in our some of the best times and craziest moments she has had being a wedding officiant. When shopping for a wedding officiant for your same-sex wedding, ask them a few of these questions to gauge whether you have met your match to officiate your big day.

Getting to the heart and “soul” of an officiant…….

  1. What was the most moving wedding you celebrated?

There have been so many awesome weddings but perhaps the most touching moment during a wedding was when an older couple were both remarrying for the second time after many years of unhappiness. Keep in mind that the officiant is always the one who holds it all together when emotions get “high”. When I witnesses the bride’s 96 year old mother walking her down the aisle, I had tears in my eyes. It took her a while to get down the aisle but with every labored and slow step it just intensified what everyone there felt. Every one of those steps and moments was sacred and treasured…and will always be remembered.

  1. What was the biggest wedding mistake you ever made and “vowed” never to repeat?

I am proud to say that this only happened one time only. I said the wrong name of the groom. No one seemed to mind my flub up as I made a slight joke about it. Everyone else chuckled and I corrected my mistake right away…except for the mother of the groom who informed me I had ruined the day. Interestingly, the groom was not even aware. And I had so many compliments on the wedding in spite of my mistake~!

  1. Have you ever turned down a couple’s invitation to perform their ceremony and why? NO
  2. What do you think is your main responsibility as an officiant?

To create the most heartfelt, unique and beautiful memory possible that will be treasured and savored always by the couple I am marrying and their guests. I do this by getting to know each couple well and then creating a ceremony that speaks of who they are and who they will become as a couple. There should never be a template wedding…and there should be laughter and tears side by side in the ceremony. The ceremony should be a unique celebration of their love and journey together.

  1. What’s the best compliment a wedding guest ever gave you?

When very religious and traditional parents of the bride who wanted a proper “church wedding” for their daughter ( but knew they would not get it) told me that the ceremony they had just witnessed me officiate was one of the most touching and heartfelt they had ever seen. They said this with tears of joy and gratitude streaming down their faces in spite of the fact that it was not “religious” the way they wanted it.

  1. What is your biggest challenge when officiating a wedding?

I don’t consider much to be a challenge anymore because I realize that it is always good to be expectant and prepared for the unexpected. Things happen that are not planned and as the officiant, you have to learn to have a back-up plan, to take charge, stay calm and roll with it. This confidence comes with the job and with experience.

  1. What is the funniest or oddest moment in a wedding you celebrated?

There have been so many~! But the oddest had to be when at a very non-tradiitional wedding, a drag queen bridesmaid wanted to adjust “her” stockings and did so by just lifting his dress up over his waist to pull them up while in the processional line. The other memory I have that also gets a top rating is when a bride got very drunk before the ceremony and kept telling me during the ceremony how much she loved me and how beautiful I was. And leaned in several times to kiss me~!!!

  1. What is your rock bottom wish for every couple?

Outrageous love, laughter, health, prosperity and connection~! From this day forward~!!

  1. What do you love about celebrating weddings?

So many things….but seeing, hearing and feeling the depth of connection and love between couples as they publicly express their feelings for one another simply cannot be matched. End of story….
