So you and your partner are finally getting hitched – congratulations! Your wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, and the beginning of a new chapter together. But wedding planning can be stressful and overwhelming (this is when you find out which one of you is definitely the diva in the relationship) There’s so much to organise, and where do you start?!

Fear not, loyal readers, we’ve put together a nice and easy same-sex wedding cheatsheet to help you organise the big day and make your wedding sparkle. Read on for inspiration…

Choose a venue that’s you

First things first, you need to sort out your venue – once this is booked, everything else will start falling into place… There are two routes you can go down with venue: go cute and personal, and pick somewhere that is special to you and your partner. Your guests will love the story and significance behind the venue.

Or simply go for something fabulous – there are plenty of amazing LGBT wedding venues out there so get looking now! Choose something that represents you as a couple… Do you want to go rustic or sophisticated; tranquil beach ceremony or busy metropolitan party? Make sure you’re true to yourselves, and pick a venue that you really love.

Be bold with your theme

Once you’ve picked your venue, then you can get started on the theme. The potential here is so exciting. Go rustic country, traditional, fancy dress, art deco… The possibilities are endless; check out this year’s wedding trends to inspire you. This year is all about color, color, color! Forget pastels and neutrals – we’re talking corals and peaches, and plenty of gorgeous greens… Add splashes of colour with bunting, balloons and flowers. This is your chance to add a bit of fun and rainbow to the day – it’s a time for celebrating your love so enjoy yourselves!

Start thinking early on about your guestlist

The guestlist is a pretty important one… Unless you’ve got a gazillion dollars stashed away somewhere, you won’t be able to invite everyone in the world. Be prepared to have to compromise, and work on that list together. The size of your guestlist will dictate your budget for venue and catering too; after all, you have to be able to fit everyone in and feed them!

Express yourselves with your outfits

Each couple is unique, so all we can really say is go and express yourselves. It’s totally up to you as a couple how you do this – if you want to complement each other with matching outfits or show off your own unique style… There are so many beautiful same-sex wedding outfits out there! But at the end of the day, two things are important: you should feel comfortable (you’re probably going to be doing a lot of eating and dancing!) and filthy gorgeous.

Sync up with speeches

If both you and your other half are going to be speaking at the wedding, make sure you coordinate your speeches so you don’t end up saying thank you to the same person twice, or missing anyone out! Aside from that, go crazy! Even if it’s both sides of how you two met, everyone will love the different perspectives.

Get creative with your catering

Food is a pretty important part of your big day – if you play your cards right, your guests will be talking about your wedding food for years to come… There are so many different options out there now for wedding catering, so if you’re not having a traditional, all-white weddings, why are you having a stuffy sit-down 3-course meal? Pick something that suits you, and that you’ll enjoy: have a champagne brunch, or a light afternoon tea. If you’re having a rustic countryside wedding, why not have a barbecue or hog roast? Or if you’re in the city, get take-out! Dare to be bold and your guests will love it.

Plan fun wedding favors

Wedding favors are a great way of saying thank you to your wedding guests, and showing your appreciation for the support and love they’ve given you and your partner over the years. You don’t have to spend loads of money – something personal and even handmade makes for a lovely keepsake for your loved ones. And if you’re feeling stumped, there are loads of great websites out there with fun and quirky wedding favor ideas; check them out. We love the range of wedding favors you can buy and personalize online – look here for more inspiration.

Enjoy yourselves!

Last but certainly not least – don’t forget to enjoy yourselves! Don’t let the stress of planning get to you – it’s fine to work hard organising up until your big day, but make sure you relax when it finally arrives. Make sure you spend plenty of time with your partner (and not just posing for photos), and be sure to just bask in the love of your friends and family around you.
