The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Albuquerque
Same-sex marriage became legally recognized by the state of New Mexico in December of 2013. Since then, all county clerks are required to issue marriage licenses.
This ruling came as the result of Griego v. Oliver in Bernalillo County in August 2013. An Albuquerque judge ruled in favor of a lesbian couple that had been wanting to obtain a marriage license. The judge ordered the Bernalillo County Clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to qualified same-sex couples.
Obtaining a Marriage License in Albuquerque
In order to obtain a marriage license in Albuquerque you must visit the Bernalillo County Clerk. The fee is $25 and the licenses are issued immediately.
You will both need to bring your current legal picture ID or birth certificate, along with proof your Social Security Number – your social security card, a W2, or a tax return.
