The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Baltimore

Same-sex marriage became legal in Maryland on January 1, 2013. The Maryland legislature had passed marriage equality laws, but local anti-gay activists challenged the law with a referendum. Maryland citizens voted in favor of equality.

The Baltimore Pride festival in July showcases the local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. According to The Williams Institute, there are 5.8 same-sex couples per 1000 households in Maryland, which is around 12,538 couples in total.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Baltimore

Getting a marriage license in the city of Baltimore is different than getting a marriage license in Baltimore County. Baltimore County is a separate jurisdiction. Marriage licenses obtained in Townson are not valid in the City of Baltimore. Baltimore charges $85 cash for their marriage licenses. For more info on Baltimore city marriage licenses, start here.

If you are getting married in Baltimore County, you can get a marriage license from the Baltimore County Clerk of Court on Monday to Friday between 8:30am and 4:00pm. Only one person needs to be at the office to apply. The fee is $35, payable in cash only. There is a 48-hour waiting period before you can use your license, and it expires after 6 months.
