The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Boston
A court decision in 2003 paved the way for same-sex marriage across the United States. On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first – and for many years, only – state that had marriage equality. When the state legislature was presented with a constitutional amendment that would have ended same-sex marriages in Massachusetts, they voted strongly against it, showing the state’s strong support for equality.
Boston Pride Week takes place every year in June. According to The Williams Institute, same-sex couples make up 8 households out of every 1,000 – about 20,256 couples in all.
Obtaining a Marriage License in Boston
Boston marriage licenses are issued by the City Clerk. Both of you must register your intent to marry in person with a valid government-issued ID. The cost is $50. The license is valid for 60 days with a 3-day waiting period before it can be used.
