In the past, same-sex marriage was banned under a constitutional amendment. However, after a Supreme Court ruling, same-sex marriage became legal in South Carolina in November 2014.

The Charleston Pride Festival takes place at the end of July/beginning of August. According to The Williams Institute, 4 out of every 1,000 couples were same-sex couples – that’s 7,214 couples in all.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Charleston

To get a marriage license in Charleston, you must lodge a written application at the Charleston County Probate Court. Both of you must be present. The license costs $70, payable in cash only. There is a 24-hour waiting period before the license can be picked up.
