Hosting Your Same-Sex Wedding in Chicago

If you are hosting your same-sex wedding in Chicago, you are in one of the most beautiful, gay-friendly cities in the United States. The city is clean, fun and welcoming. Some awesome wedding photo locations include: The Bean at Millennium Park, get out of the Ledge at the Skydeck at Willis Tower if you aren’t afraid of heights, Grant Park has endless beautiful backdrops, the 18 mile lakefront trail, in front of the historic Wrigley Field, or the Cell if you are a Sox fan. Chicago Pride Fest, one of the largest in the US, occurs in June each year.

For a fun, timeless wedding photo op, have your wedding photographer take a black and white photo in front of City Hall for a classic wedding photo that could be from any era due to the history and age of the building.

Wedding season in Chicago is obviously June – October due to the weather, with January – March being less likely to be as booked or in demand.

The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Chicago

Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in Illinois since November 20, 2013, when Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the freedom to marry into law after it was approved by the IL House on November 5 and the IL Senate on February 14. Same-sex couples were scheduled to begin marrying in Illinois on June 1, 2014, but in February 2014, a federal judge ruled that in Cook County, the law must take effect immediately, since anti-marriage laws are unconstitutional. Several other counties followed the order, while other counties waited until June 1st.

According to The Williams Institute’s analysis of the 2010 U.S. Census, 23,049 same-sex couples are living in Illinois, representing 4.8 same-sex couples per 1,000 households.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Chicago

Cook County marriage licenses are valid the next day after they are issued. You can’t obtain a license and get married that day, so plan ahead. The fee is $60, but if you are in a civil union currently and wish to convert your civil union into a marriage, the fee is waived.
