The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Denver
Colorado has the historic honor of being the first place where a same-sex marriage license was issued, by Boulder county clerk Clela Rorex in 1975. Those marriages were later challenged, and by 2000, the Colorado legislature voted to ban same-sex marriage. A constitutional amendment followed in 2006.
In 2014, a Supreme Court ruling struck down Colorado’s anti-equality amendment, and same-sex marriages were performed starting that October.
Denver PrideFest takes place every June. According to the Williams Institute, 6.3 out of every 1000 households is a same-sex couple, giving a total of 12,424. Denver is one of the top cities in the US for same-sex couples, with 15.65 couples out of every 1000 households!
Obtaining a Marriage License in Denver
To get your marriage license in Denver, you both must appear in person at the Office of the Clerk and Recorder. You can fill in the form online beforehand to save some time. The marriage license is valid for 35 days, and it costs $30.
