The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Kaua’i
Hawaii played a pivotal role in the early fight for marriage equality. In 1990, three same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses in Hawaii, which were denied. This led to a case with the Hawaii State Supreme Court, which, in 1993, made the groundbreaking decision that denying these couples the right to marriage was discriminatory. Unfortunately, before a law could be put in place to allow same-sex marriages, anti-equality forces passed a constitutional amendment making same-sex marriage illegal.
In February 2011, the Hawaiian legislature allowed civil unions. Then, in November 2013, marriage equality became the law of the land in Hawaii.
According to the Williams Institute, there are about 7.11 same sex couples for every 1000 – thatís 3,239 overall. Every June, Lambda Aloha holds the Kauaíi Pride festival.
