The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Little Rock

Same-sex marriage was illegal in Arkansas starting from February 1997, and a constitutional amendment banning it was passed in November 2004. In July 2013, Arkansas couples filed a lawsuit seeking the freedom to marry. This lead to the anti-equality laws being struck down in May 2014, and many couples married shortly thereafter. However, the decision was stayed a week later. Shortly before Obergefell v Hodges made marriage equality legal throughout the country, a judge declared that those marriages were still valid.

Little Rock Pride Fest happens every year in October. According to the Williams Institute, there are 4226 same-sex couples in Arkansas, which is 3.68 out of every 1000 households.
