The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Los Angeles

The freedom to marry became law in the state of California starting on June 26th, 2013. This was the result of a United States Supreme Court ruling in the case of Hollingsworth v. Perry. The ruling declared that Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriages, was invalid. This came after several previous court rulings that also found that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional.

California is home to the largest number of same-sex couples, with 98,153 same-sex couples – according to the US Census from 2010. The Williams Institute compiled data from the 2010 census, which also found that there was a total of 69,841 unwed same-sex couples. It is generally assumed that about half of these unwed couples will marry. With the average couple spending $10,000 on their wedding, this could result in $350 million in revenue for wedding-related businesses.
