Getting Married in Madison
Nicknamed Mad-town, there is nothing “mad” about wanting to get married in Wisconsin’s capital city. A summer wedding in Madison has a lot to offer. Take a trip to the Dane County Farmer’s Market around Capitol Square – where you can purchase fresh cheese, meat, and produce.
In August, Madison hosts the Great Taste of the Midwest craft beer festival – just make sure you get your tickets in advance, as they often sell out within an hour of going on sale.
In addition to activities, the downtown area has hotels, churches, and other locations to consider for your ceremony and reception.
The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Madison
Back in 2006, a referendum was passed that invalidated same-sex marriages in the state of Wisconsin. Dane County, the home of Madison, was the only county where a majority of the voters did not vote yes. A legal challenge was issued in 2009, but eventually found constitutional.
It was not until October 6th, 2014, when the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin overturned the ban on same-sex marriage, that same-sex marriages become legal in the state of Wisconsin.
Obtaining a Marriage License in Madison
You will need to stop by the Dane County Clerk’s office to obtain a marriage license. Bring your photo IDs, a printed document verifying your residence during the past 30 days, and a birth certificate. You must also be able to provide the date and place of your wedding ceremony.
The license fee of $120 is payable only in cash. It can take up to six days for your license to be issued and it is valid for thirty days, so plan your arrangement accordingly.
