Same-sex marriage was officially illegal in Minnesota starting in June 1997. However, when anti-equality activists tried to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage , Minnesota became the first state to strike down such an amendment at the ballot box. Marriage equality came to Minnesota in August 2013 after the legislature voted in a bill allowing it.
Twin Cities Pride takes place every June. According to the Williams Institute, Minnesota has 10,207 same-sex couples, or 4.89 per every 1000 households. In Minneapolis, that jumps to 21.74 couples per 1000 households – thatís 3,555 overall.
Obtaining a Marriage License in Minneapolis
To get a marriage license in Hennepin County, fill out an application form (either online or on paper) and bring it to a Hennepin County service center. If one of you canít make it to the service center, youíll need to fill out a party not appearing form and have it witnessed by a notary public.
The fee is $115, or $40 if youíve taken a premarital education course. You must apply at least five days before your wedding, and your license is valid for six months.
