Hosting Your Same-Sex Wedding in Montgomery

Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and is also a thriving metropolitan area, with a varied landscape and a rich history. With a large population and plenty to see and do, Montgomery will make for a great location for your gay wedding.

Montgomery is tied to the history of the United States, especially when related to the civil rights movement, the civil war, and the struggles of African-Americans throughout the decades. Montgomery is home to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church – Martin Luther King Jr.’s church. Other sites include the First White House of the Confederate States and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Montgomery

Same-sex couples were not granted the right to marry in Montgomery or the rest of Alabama until the United States Supreme Court ruling on June 26th, 2015. This ruling declared that all state marriage bans on same-sex couples were unconstitutional. Many groups fought hard over the past couple of decades to attempt and bring about marriage equality prior to the Supreme Court ruling. This included the groups Equality Alabama and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

The Williams Institute has compiled some interesting data based on the US Census of 2010. Among their findings was the fact that there are 6,582 same-sex couples in Alabama. While this census data only listed 377 same-sex couples in Montgomery County, this could potentially result in almost $1 million dollars in wedding related expenses that would support wedding businesses in Montgomery.
