The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Newark

The freedom to marry was accepted in New Jersey starting on October 21, 2013. This came after Mercer County Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in the case of Garden State Equality v. Dow. The New Jersey Supreme Court did not issue a stay on the ruling and Governor Chris Christie withdrew his appeal of the decision – granting same-sex couples the right to marry in New Jersey.

The Williams Institute has released statistics taken from the US Census of 2010 to showcase the number of same-sex couples throughout the country. Looking at these statistics, there were 16,875 same-sex couples as of the 2010 census. It is estimated that about half of these couples will likely marry. If the average couple spends about $10,000 on their wedding, this could mean over $80 million in revenue for wedding related businesses in the state.
