The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Puerto Rico
When the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriages on June 26th, 2015, the same freedom was brought to all US territories, including Puerto Rico.
Previously, in March of 1999, the Puerto Rico legislature had passed a state statute that restricted marriage to different-sex couples. This was overridden by the ruling from June of 2015.
Obtaining a Marriage License in Puerto Rico
You can get married in Puerto Rico, but you will first need to obtain a marriage license. Marriage licenses are available from the Demographic Registry Office. You will not have to wait for your license. Required documentation includes identification, passport, medical certificates, an Internal Revenue Stamp from the Puerto Rico Government, and copies of your birth certificates.
US citizens that wish to get married in Puerto Rico will need a sworn statement or affidavit that states you are not a resident of Puerto Rico and that the purpose of your visit to the island is to get married.
