The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Sacramento
Same-sex marriage was originally prohibited in California, after a state statute was passed in 1977 and signed into law by then-Governor Jerry Brown. In 2005, State Judge Richard A. Kramer ruled in favor of the freedom to marry in California. This was followed by a vote in favor of same-sex marriage by the California Assembly, which was eventually vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It was not until the US Supreme Court ruled that the previous bans were unconstitutional on June 26th, 2013, that same-sex marriage became permitted in California.
