The History of Same-Sex Marriages in San Francisco
Same-sex marriage has been illegal in California since 1977. However, in February 2004, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom started issuing marriage license to same-sex couples. Hundreds of couples married, and while the marriages were later declared invalid, it was a turning point in the fight for marriage equality.
In 2005, a court case found that the states marriage ban was unconstitutional. This lead to a bill allowing freedom of marriage – but it was vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. This happened again in 2007. After another court case in June 2008, same-sex marriages began once again in California, but these were halted in November thanks to Proposition 8). Marriage equality advocates challenged the constitutionality of the amendment, and marriages resumed in June 2013. Whew!
San Francisco Pride takes place every June. According to the Williams Institute, in California, there are 7.8 same-sex couples per 1000 households, which is 98,153 overall. In San Francisco, that rises to a staggering 30.25 same-sex couples per 1000 households – 10,461 total!
