The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Sarasota

Same-sex couples in Florida began getting married on January 6, 2015, after a stay of the ruling by US District Court Judge Robert Hinkle expired. The previous ruling came on August 21, 2014 in favor of the freedom to marry. Opponents attempted to appeal the decision, but ultimately the US Supreme Court refused to review the case and the stay eventually expired.

The state of Florida has over 48,000 same-sex couples, as of the 2010 US Census. The Williams Institute has gathered data from the census to explore the number of same-sex couples in each state. Out of the 48,000 same-sex couples in the state, just under 42,000 were unmarried. Why is this number significant? If you assume that about half of those unmarried couples were to get married, the wedding industry in Florida could see an increase of $210 million in spending.
