Getting Married in Scottsdale

Located in Maricopa County, Arizona, Scottsdale is a bustling waterfront city with a proud LGBT community. If you happen to be planning an October wedding, you will be in the city in time for the Rainbows Festival. For an April wedding, you can take some time to take part in the Phoenix Pride Festival.

Of course, there is plenty of other attractions to check out any time of the year, including the Camelback Mountain or the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.

The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Scottsdale

The freedom to marry came to same-sex couples starting on October 17th, 2014. This came after US District Court Judge Sedwick ruled in favor of a legal case that challenged the state’s anti-marriage laws. This was nearly 40 years after Arizona passed a law limiting marriage to different-sex couples in April of 1975.

Since legalizing same-sex marriages, the state of Arizona has likely seen an increase in spending for wedding-related businesses and venues. According to data from the 2010 US Census and compiled by the Williams Institute, the state of Arizona had 15,817 same-sex couples in 2010. About 13,552 of these couples were living together, but unmarried. If you can assume that half of these couples wed, the state may see close to $70 million in spending on weddings in the years following the legalization of same-sex marriages.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Scottsdale

The city of Scottsdale does not issue marriage licenses, but they can be obtained by visiting the Maricopa County Clerk of Court. You will need to pay a $76 fee, which is payable by cash, money order, or credit card. Both parties will need to be present, along with valid photo ID’s. You will receive your marriage license the same day. The license is valid for up to one year from the date that it is issued and is valid anywhere in the state of Arizona.
