The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Sonoma
The path to victory was a long time coming in California. There were several months in 2008 when same-sex weddings were temporarily legal. It was not until June 26th, 2013 that same-sex marriage finally becomes legal in the state of California. This came after a US Supreme Court dismissed the case of Hollingsworth v. Perry – declaring that the proponents of Proposition 8 lacked legal standing to appeal the previous decision from 2010 that found the proposition unconstitutional.
California has one of the largest populations of same-sex couples. According to statistics released by the Williams Institute that was obtained by the US Census of 2010, California had 98,153 same-sex couples in 2010. It was estimated that about 69,841 of these couples were unmarried. Using the average wedding cost of $10,000 and a marriage rate of 50 percent, the state of California may have noticed as much as $350 million in revenue as the result of about 35,000 same-sex marriages that would not have been allowed in the past.
