The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Tacoma

Same-sex couples were able to start marrying on December 6, 2012 in the state of Washington. This came after voters in the state approved Referendum 74 during election day on November 6th, 2012. The passing of Referendum 74 upheld the freedom to marry and was signed into law by Governor Christine Gregoire on February 13th, 2012.

By legalizing same-sex marriages, the state of Washington, and Tacoma, has probably seen an increase in spending on weddings. This has had a positive impact on the economy. The Williams Institute, from the University of California, has taken data from the US Census of 2010 to look at the number of same-sex couples in each state. There were 15,931 same-sex couples in Washington that were unmarried.
