The History of Same-Sex Marriages in Tampa

On August 21, 2014, US District Judge Robert Hinkle rules in favor of the freedom to marry. This ruling stays for 91 days and the state of Florida attempted unsuccessfully to seek additional stays. In the end, the stay expires in Hinkle’s ruling, granting thousands of same-sex couples the right to marry – starting on January 6th, 2015.

There are 48,496 same-sex couples in the state of Florida. This information was compiled by the Williams Institute using data from the 2010 US Census. In Hillsborough County, where Tampa is located, there are about 3,342 same-sex couples. It is estimated that about half of these couples will get married, now that same-sex marriages are legal in the state of Florida. Those 1,650 weddings would mean almost $8 million in wedding-related spending – which would be a large boost to the local economy.
